 TAX CREDITS
(This infomation is current but subject to legislation being debated this session. See more info on our home page.)

Owners of State or National Registered properties, or contributing properties in Historic Districts, are eligible for tax credits for rehabilitation and maintenance work performed on their properties!

The federal program provides an income-tax credit equal to 20% of qualified expenditures on income-producing properties. The state program provides a tax credit equal to 25% of qualified expenditures on both income and non-income producing properties.

Projects must be for a minimum of $5,000, and must be completed in the calendar year for which the credit is approved. Two or more projects can be combined to meet the minimum (for instance a new roof and an exterior paint job).

Your project must be approved by the cultural resources office of KSHS before work begins. You will need to photo-document the approved work process and verify completion. Call Cultural Resources at 785-272-8681 or email culturalresources@kshs.org, or visit the KSHS web page on tax credits.

New Pilot Program will Focus on Historic School Buildings
Deadline April 30, 2010

The Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF) preservation fund represents a partnership between the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. Lowe’s desires to support the preservation of significant public properties in the communities it serves. To this end, the LCEF has provided funding to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a national nonprofit organization that works to preserve historic sites and revitalize communities across America. The National Trust, through the LCEF preservation fund grant program, will use the funds to support historic preservation projects.

In 2010, a new pilot program will focus on historic school buildings that are being stabilized or restored, and that upon completion will be open to the public and serve the community. Grants are intended to further the restoration or rehabilitation of these buildings by providing funding for construction expenses. The maximum grant amount will be $50,000.
This source is NOT FEDERAL, but could be used to match federal funding.

Kansas Humanities Council Heritage Grants Expanding

Kansas Humanities Council’s Heritage Grants are intended to encourage the preservation and study of local and regional cultural resources and to assist cultural agencies to develop stronger practices in maintaining and managing local heritage resources. Heritage Grants are awards of up to $3,500 and support oral history projects, care of collections and photographs, basic research, cataloging and indexing, language preservation, and best practices.

“Although Heritage Grants are not intended to help preserve the physical structure of buildings,” says Dan Carey-Whalen, KHC Director of Programs, "these grants could be used to help preserve, interpret, and share the human stories that make the buildings significant and provide a better understanding of our state.”

In preparation for Kansas 150, the 150th commemoration of Kansas Statehood in 2011, the KHC's Heritage Grant program is expanding. In addition to supporting projects that preserve local history, Heritage Grants will also provide resources to encourage local history museums and other historical organizations to plan for their own future, including strategic planning, board development, website development, photo digitization, and the creation of new interpretation methods (tours, podcasts, etc.).

"One possible connection between historic preservation of the built environment and what can be funded by Kansas Humanities Heritage Grant,” Carey-Whalen commented, “would be the creation of an interpretive tour, such as a podcast or walking tour. The key would be interpretive, in other words, providing a deeper understanding of the importance of 'place' and the built environment."

Any not-for-profit organization in Kansas can apply for a Heritage Program grant, except colleges and universities. You do not need to be incorporated or have 501 (c) (3) status. Successful proposals will include the use of a project consultant, a timeline for the project’s completion, a detailed budget with cost share, and a plan for sharing the project’s results with the general public.

Past Heritage Grant recipients have included historical societies, museums, libraries, churches, farm organizations, service clubs, tribal organizations, ethnic associations, arts groups, senior centers, city governments, and community education groups.
