EVENT: Presentation: Establishing a Wildflower Garden

EVENT: Barber County Wildflower Tour

DATE: Saturday, May 8th, 2010 @ 8:30am

LOCATION: Barber County; Medicine Lodge, KS

Meet at the Medicine Lodge High School. Enjoy continental breakfast and slides of flowers we expect to see. Buses will provide transportation.Morning participants will return to the school at noon. EVENT: Plant the Prairie

DATE: Saturday, May 8th, 2010 @ 9am-noon

LOCATION: Kansas City, MO

Gathering to help plant wildflower seedlings grown from locally harvested seeds on

three of Kansas City's beautiful remnant natural communities. May remove invasive plants from these areas, time permitting, to give the seedlings plenty of space to grow. Three WildLands sites will be targeted:Ernie Miller Park remnant prairie, Olathe, Kansas, managed by Johnson County Park and Recreation District. Rocky Point Glades, Swope Park, Missouri, managed by Kansas City Missouri Parks and Recreation. Jerry Smith Park prairie, south Kansas City, Missouri, managed by Kansas City Missouri Parks and Recreation. This is a great opportunity to do hands-on restoration and conservation work on our urban area's ever-dwindling wild acres. You will help make a difference to the wild areas of Kansas City that will be evident for years to come! EVENT: Native Gardening Class

EVENT: Papermaking from Plant Fiber Workshop

DATE: Sunday, May 16th, 2010 @ 10am-3pm

LOCATION: Shawnee County; Topeka, KS

Jeff Hansen will teach participants how to make paper using native plant fibers. Instruction includes how to identity the different types of plant fiber, the process of extracting the fiber from the plant, and the process of forming sheets of paper from the resulting fiber. Each team of two will process a different  plant fiber into paper. The resulting paper will be shared equally among class members. The class will be conducted at historic Karlyle Woods, located at 3440 NW Button Rd in Topeka. The cost of the workshop is $30 and includes lunch & all materials. EVENT: Anderson County Prairies Tour (rare opportunity usually limited to researcher)

DATE: Saturday, May 22nd, 2010 @ 10am-Noon

LOCATION: Anderson County; Welda, KS

The Nature Conservancy's Anderson County Prairies, located south of Garnett, is

a latticework of historic tallgrass prairie of high biological importance and subtle

beauty. Anderson County's deeper soils and higher annual rainfall support plant

species more unique and diverse than other tallgrass prairie regions.

The Conservancy is offering a walking tour of this tallgrass prairie. The preserve

has been the site of ongoing Mead's Milkweed and grassland bird research by

the University of Kansas Biological Survey. The tour guides will be ecologists

from the Biological Survey who will discuss the special significance of Anderson

County Prairies, the natural history of the plants and animals of the region, and

why these prairies are disappearing. Access to Anderson County Prairies is

usually limited to researchers. The registration for this tour is $10 for Conservancy members and $15 for non-members. Reservations are required.

Wednesday highlights:
 
At the Capitol Wednesday afternoon, conferees attended a special meeting of the KSHS and Dept of Revenue. The meeting was held to address concerns about the recent cap placed on Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits. (See article on home page.) From the podium of the House Chambers, Deputy Kansas State Historic Preservation Officer Patrick Zollner, (left) , and Kansas Secretary of Revenue Joan Wagnon (right) answer questions from a crowd of more than 50 people. The audience included representatives of historic preservation organizations, developers, banks, and individuals from across Kansas.
